BEAR AWARENESS
Attention: Residents and Visitors The attractive community of Anmore is also an attractive community for wildlife, including bears Animals do not recognize the same boundaries as people. Because of this, people are required to learn to co-exist with them. Essentially, we are visitors on their land and we need to learn how to respect their space. Please take note of the following tips that can help you to co-exist with wildlife in Anmore: - Do not leave garbage outside overnight as this attracts all animals, including pets*
- Put garbage out at 7am on the morning of collection only
- Purchasing an animal-resistant garbage container that contains food odours
- Take bird feeders down between March and December (even if empty)
- Do not compost meat, dairy or fish products, and periodically sprinkle composts with lime to reduce odours (and aid the compost process)
- Keep barbeques clean by burning food off the grill and emptying the grease tray
- Do not store food outside (freezers are not bear proof)
- Put smelly food scraps in a sealed bag & keep in the freezer (indoors) until garbage day
- Store pet food and livestock feed indoors
- Supervise small pets whenever they are outdoors or keep them indoors
- Pick fruit off trees as it ripens and remove fallen fruit from the ground
- NEVER, EVER, feed any wild animal They will return to known food sources and become accustomed to non-natural sources instead of their proper diet
*In BC it is an offence to feed or leave attractants available for dangerous wildlife The Environment Committee will soon be working with Village Staff toward making Anmore a “Bear Smart” Community, and will host a bear awareness seminar in the fall.
